Tire Changeover: Cost, Time, Storage & Booking
At Garage Path57, tire changeover is our seasonal marathon. Twice a year, we see hundreds of vehicles come through for the spring/fall swap. And the most common question: "How much does it cost and how long does it take?"
I'll give you all the answers here, with no invoice surprises.
How Much Does a Tire Changeover Cost?
Cost varies by several factors, but here's what to expect in Montreal:
- Tires already on rims: between $40 and $80 for all four. The simplest and fastest option.
- Mount/dismount on rims: between $80 and $150, including dismount, mount, balancing, and valve.
- With full balancing: add $15 to $25 per wheel if needed.
Prices may vary depending on vehicle type (an SUV costs more than a sedan) and tire size.
How Long Does It Take?
If your tires are already on rims, expect about 30 to 45 minutes. If we need to dismount and remount on rims, it can take 60 to 90 minutes.
During peak season, wait times can stretch. That's why we always recommend booking ahead.
Tire Storage
No space at home? You have options:
- Home storage: cool, dry place out of sunlight. Tires on rims stacked flat, standalone tires upright.
- Professional storage: some shops offer this service. Convenient to avoid hauling and space issues.
When to Book Your Appointment
Here's the golden rule we repeat every season: book 3 to 4 weeks before the rush.
- Fall: book in September for an October appointment.
- Spring: book in February for a March-April appointment.
Also take advantage of the visit to have your brakes and alignment checked. When the wheels are already off, it's the perfect time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my tires myself?
Yes, if you have the equipment and experience. But without professional balancing, you risk vibrations and premature wear.
Do I need balancing at every changeover?
Not necessarily if tires are on rims and already balanced. But we recommend it at least once a year or if you feel steering vibrations.
How far ahead should I book?
Ideally 3 to 4 weeks before the season. During peak times, delays can exceed 2 weeks.
Should I replace all 4 tires at once?
Strongly recommended for even handling. If replacing only two, put the new ones on the rear.
Does the changeover include an inspection?
At our shop, yes. We systematically check tire condition, visible brakes, and suspension.
